News & Press: Poems  About  Frank Bell

Poetry by Jean Hennen

GOD MADE ME WILD

God made me wild, He made me free,

Won’t you please understand me?

He gave me the instinct to survive,

Said flee from danger to stay alive.

You’re good to eat, I made prey animals too.

There’s lots of variety in my creative zoo.

If something alarms you, don’t you stay.

On hooves of steel make your getaway.

Please understand I have it in my mind, You humans are ones of those predator kind.

I can’t change my nature, he made me so.

If we’re going to get along, you must adapt to me, you know.

We could go like the wind together across a grassy sea

If only you’d try to understand me.

I don’t speak English so you have to speak " horse."

It’s your body language I understand, of course.

Some folks understand this, if everyone would,

My life with you would be as it should.

Take true unity and harmony from Tom and Ray

So we have a good relationship every day.

Buck, Frank, John and Pat all understand too.

Take from them what works for me and you.

Give me your love, show me you care,

Only then can we truly share.

God made me wild, he made me free,

Won’t you please understand me?

BONDING AND INTIMACY

The touch, where is that spot?

The search, ah, you found it, thanks a lot.

Stroking under the tail, hand covering my eye,

You’ve blocked out the world, it’s just you and I.

You care about me, I know that you do.

You gave to me, I’ll give to you

LOVING THE HORSE

Loving the horse not for what he can give to you,

But for what you can give to him.

Now you can move in spirit as one.

THE PLANTING OF SEEDS

The dance begins is the first movement of the symphony,

Flowing from the overture of bonding, take and give, and intimacy

A dance movement blending into a quiet wind down,

Softening to a buttery give.

It is the sprouting from the planting of seeds.

ONE REIN STOP

Hi ho Silver! Away we go.

Not for me- I’m no bronc rider, you know.

I need a tool to keep me safe and sound.

In Frank’s one rein stop, a technique I’ve found.

It’s part of his safety system, you see.

To keep out of trouble, horses and folks like you and me.

Ask for that head to come around.

Do it first from the ground.

When you have it solid, into the saddle you go.

And practice again that one rein stop you know.

Then out on the trail if your horse decides to shy,

And you think through the brush he just might fly,

Just one rein stop into that safe loving spot.

Then thank the Lord and Frank Bell a lot.

TO ALEX

We first met at the expo, A good day for me.

For now I have a friend whom I love, you see.

And here at this clinic, I’ve gotten to know her well,

And I’m glad she’s my friend I’m here to tell.

She’s helped me so much in learning to dance with the horse.

She saw things I couldn’t see, of course.

Always cheerful, with patience she worked with me,

Encouraging and positive as she could be.

She let me ride her horse, Shaitan, is his name.

Told me how he liked to play a game.

Though we concentrated much on Frank, kept him on call,

She was not jealous, didn’t mind at all.

She can do many things at once in an organized efficient way

As she moves through a hectic day.

Yet she always had time for you, as though you were the only one,

And she knew somehow she’d get her work done.

No matter how busy or even not feeling well,

She always seems to make us feel swell.

So we honor you, Alex, for the person you are.

In our book you’re a shining star.

OTHER THANKS

I didn’t know any of you when we arrived.

Now we’ve bonded together, and we all survived.

I thank you all for the things you gave to me.

The tips, encouragement, teaching and support, you see.

But most of all thanks to the horses, I listened with care.

They had a great deal to teach me and share.

And today with one special horse having a hard time,

we danced a ballet on the ground together across a tarp, and

It was sublime!

THANKS FRANK

With his cornball hats and riding in shorts, who

Does he think he is?

We all know, to us he is the ultimate whiz!

He does not care for convention and such.

His focus is on the horses he loves so much.

For someone to show us how, we have been praying

We’re so glad we found you, You see what we’re saying?

I've thought, quick release, timing and things of that kind.

Will we ever be able to ride with our mind?

Ask, anticipate, release, reward.

If you want to strike a soft chord.

Never ever release until soft, you see

Then they’ll get it every time, be as soft as can be.

The white zone, a loving place: the black zone up against the brick wall.

How will we ever remember this all?

If your intent is right, it won’t be a fight.

We’ll keep trying till we get it right.

We’re busy in the arena for hours on end

With string games and exercises, our time we spend.

Oh no, not another video, it’s more than we can stand

And then, more homework- oh my land!

Frank gives us his time till he’s totally drained.

Emotionally, physically, mentally strained.

Stroke, stroke, stroke, I’m not saying it any more.

Don’t give up on us, Frank, please implore, implore.

You care about us, Frank, we know that you do.

You gave to us, we’ll give to you.

We’ll take what you gave and give it away.

First to our horses, then to those we meet along the way.

We’re only a small group, but we’ll do what we can

To make the world a better place for horse and man.

To horses everywhere, we wish you well.

May you all have owners that know Frank Bell.
