Many supplements advertise live cultures, most live cultures are killed in the highly acidic environment of the stomach and never reach the cecum where most of the fermentation and digestion takes place, and in the colon where vitamins, minerals, volatile fatty acids, and amino acids are absorbed and/or synthesized.

Horses evolved to eat sixteen to eighteen hour a day, with their heads down. They need about two and a half percent of their body weight a day in good quality forage. Their stomach's only hold about two and a half gallons, more or less, so if they don't eat almost continuously their stomachs empty and because they don't have a gall bladder, there is a constant flow of bile and hydrochloric acid into the stomach. If there isn't grass to digest the stomach juices will begin to digest the lining of the stomach causing gastric ulcers. It is estimated that about ninety per cent of thoroughbred race horses have gastric ulcers, about sixty percent of all performance horses have gastric ulcers, and about twelve to fifteen per cent of the general horse population has ulcers, AND IT IS ALMOST ENTIRELY CAUSED BY FEEDING PRACTICES. If we feed horses more grass hay of moderate protein content, they will be healthier and live longer.

If horses are exercising strenuously they may need more calories than grass hay alone can provide, in that case, the judicious addition of alfalfa, up to thirty per cent of their diet, or grain is warranted. Remember in a natural environment, horses ate very little grain and then only when seeds had formed on the grasses, mostly in the Fall of the year. When horses are fed a nutrient dense diet, several times a day instead of less nutrient dense feed over a longer period of time it will make them more subject to colic and other digestive upsets.
