 Letter Of The Month: July, 2004
Hi Frank,
Just thought you'd be interested in what happened the other day. After my son, Solomon, & I finished our ride (he bareback on Amir (Arab), me in saddle on my 'trick horse' Doc), we were walking them back from the field in hand.
I'd loosened Doc's cinch & suddenly a " new" bird squawked & he spooked in place but enough to cause the saddle to slide around, under his belly. Well, you'd be surprised how fast a quarter horse can trot, then canter off my reins when there's a 'horse-eating-saddle' under there!
Every time that saddle bumped him, he would go faster! What a beautiful lunging experience! But he didn't bolt, thank God, just kept circling perfectly around me, eyes wide, looking to me while I said " easy Doc."
Then Solomon said, " Hey Dad, why don't you wind him down?" I did & he came into me, then rested and waited (almost bringing his head around toward his barrel, like in the 7-S-S-S we do on the ground). He waited until I undid the cinch then calmly walked back to the barn with me.
As always, your system works! I shudder to think of what might have happened if he'd bolted, broken the reins, tripped, etc.
